About David J

The story of David Jantjies, a young man born and raised in Macassar, Cape Town, starts at the Paul Roos Gymnasium. Although he had been lighting up stages with his charismatic energy since the tender age of 11 and, obtained great success with his family group “Chosen Family”, it was at the Paul Roos Gymnasium that David J had a very promising career in rugby. The dream of being a professional rugby player would be short lived after he sustained a broken knee injury. It was after this life-changing injury that David J met Charel Kleinhans. They would go on to perform at the well-known festival “Rocking the Daisies” in the West Coast. It was this encounter that reignited David J’s love and passion for music.

The Journey

David J continued doing music and it was through gospel music that he found great encouragement and healing. It was motivation to keep going while grieving the loss of the professional rugby career he had dreamt of. He then realised that the same way it was healing him, it was healing the people he was ministering to. He recognised the calling on his life and this would be the beginning of a very successful solo career.

David J would go on to release his first single, “Ek Sal Jubel”. The single would go on to receive more than 1000 downloads within the first week of its release. In addition to the great success of the single he is also grateful that his gift has allowed him the opportunity to travel across South Africa and the African continent. It has afforded him the opportunity to minister on great platforms and in large churches that he never thought he would have the opportunity to minister on.

David J is clear that his music is a reflection of his feelings. He calls himself a “happy singer” and says that it does not mean that he has not gone through hardships. It simply means that he chooses to tell even the most difficult stories in a joyful manner.
